April Master Ideas for Inspirements

"Whatever Happened to Justice" Understanding inspirements ideas: Choose 1 or more
  • Talk to your parents about how much taxes they pay vs. the percentage they give to charity.  If they didn't have to pay so many taxes would they contribute more to charities?
  • After 9-11, the government voted for compensation to victims' families.  Do you agree that we should forcefully be taxed to help out victims of crimes and war?  What about  fire fighters, Red Cross workers, or even a good samaritan who is killed by running into a burning building to save someone.  Should we used taxpayers dollars to compensate his/her family?
  • Visit the web sites for the following political parties and read their party platforms: Republicans, Democrats, Green Party, Libertarian, Etc.  Where do they differ or agree?  Do you believe that the politicians in power follow the ideals of their party, or do you agree with Uncle Eric that political power corrupts?
  • Look at the careers of leading government officials today and/or throughout American history.  How successful have these people been at governing their personal lives?  How successful have then been in their professional lives?
  • Read the quotes about power. Note any abuses of power you witness.  Write them down.  Or you can ask a friend or family member if they have ever been the victim of the abuse of power and to explain the circumstances.
  • Outline/summarize the diverse ways the American and French Revolution brought about political change.  What are the symbols of each revolution.  How do you think America and France as nations compare today?

LEADERSHIP ACDEMY: MASTER CLASS
Do the inspirements in all three sections to help you master the art of leadership!

Section 1: “The Art of Argument” book: Fallacies!
Review entire book by looking at all the cool comics and ads! Try to understand the fallacy in each one, even if you don’t understand the name of the fallacy.  Choose your favorite 5 and come prepared to share at least one.  (You can borrow mine if you need to!)

Section 2: “Choosing Civility” by Forni:
Read Part 3 (25 pages) and write a sentence that is your “Take Home Message” from what you read (the concept that you feel was the most important in what you read)

Section 3: “Whatever Happened to Justice?”
I. SEEK KNOWLEDGE: Highlight and bring favorite quotes from the following
1.       Read Whatever happened to Justice: Chapters 24-31
2.       Read D&C 121: 34-46
3.       Do a word study on power.  Then observe your own behavior for a day.  Are there times when you do or could abuse power?   Find examples of leaders who inspire but do not abuse the power they have.

II. GAIN UNDERSTANDING: After you have read the book, pick something that came up in your studies or that came to mind as you were studying it and study it deeper to gain better understanding.  Check out the blog for ideas and suggestions, but make it your own!
My project for understanding is: ____________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Do whatever is listed in each of the following 4 sections.

#1 FOCUS: Integrity in Society/Government
Read or watch the movie of one of the following: “Pride and Prejudice” (the A&E/BBC version) and “Lord of the Flies” (I know of no decent movie version of this…please consult with your parents before reading this one.)
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

#2 Leadership Skills: FALLACIES
Review the fallacies and look for at least 5 examples of fallacies in the books you read. (Hint: the opening sentence of “Pride and Prejudice” is one!  Just four more to go!)  Identify why it is a fallacy!
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

#3 CIVILITY IN 60 SECONDS OR LESS
Pick a civility topic from "Choosing Civility" that would have helped in either book and come prepared to teach us about it in some way in 60 seconds or less (please call Sister Biesinger if you have any questions about this one!) Have fun, be creative, and don't be afraid to bring treats, especially chocolate ones :).

#4 Leadership Skills: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO JUSTICE?

KNOW: Do all of these

·         Read Chapters 21-23 of Whatever Happened to Justice.

UNDERSTAND- Choose one or more of the following to take your knowledge to understanding:
·         Learn more about the Nuremberg trials.  Share what you learn in class.
·         Refer to page 118 (Innocent or Guilty) in WHTJ.  If you were on the jury, what would you have decided based upon your own sense of right and wrong?  Based on the laws of the day? Based on Higher Law?--Keep in mind the two fundamental laws.  Write down what you would have decided and share in class.
·         Read the constitution.  Do you believe the Constitution protects common law?  Write your thoughts and share in class.
·         Have you ever experienced or observed a situation in which the majority seemed to get out of control?  How did your friends react?  How did you act?  Did you believe the "mob" was acting in a positive and controlled way?  Do a graphic summary or write a story about your experience and share in class.

INTELLIGENCE - Do the following in class  to create intelligence
·         Participate in a debate in class about the items on page 118.  Show integrity to what you feel is right and wrong!
·         Participate in a class discussion about the two books you read and the topics of mob rule and integirty
