January Journeyman Class!

7 Habits
Read Habit 3 "Put First Things First" (Melinda Gilbert is mentoring this part, so please direct any questions or ideas you have to her...)
1) Bring one favorite quote or story to share. These can be from the 7 Habits book or anything else you feel is related.
2) Do any baby steps that inspire you, come prepared to discuss.
Then do ONE of the following:
--Commit to put your first things first this month. Use any planner that inspires you to schedule your time. Pick a time, and even a “running partner” to put your schedule in order. Identify your “Big Rocks” and your “Pebbles”.  Try to make this a routine in your life and your studies to better your time management skills.  Here are a few different links to printable planners online, or use a store bought planner, or customize your own to fit your style and needs.
-SARS that were introduced to you at the beginning of our Vanguard Year http://www.vanguardnotes.blogspot.com/2013/05/mentoringrunning-partners.html
-Donna Young Printable Planning Pages
First Things First-If you already have a “running partner” and an awesome way to schedule your time, then re-evaluate it. It may be a good time to re-commit with your “running partner”? Maybe even look at what does and does not work for your planning system?

-If you do have a great system already in place, and would like to take some time explaining to the other youth, why you use it, how you use it, or how it has improved your life, please let me know. I would love to give any youth interested time to share and inspire each other.

Leadership example focus: Martin Luther

(Please note: we will be studying more about his actual life and specifics of the world he lived in next week for Geo-conquestThis week we are only really focusing on his character as a leader and his specific actions relating to the posting of the 95 Thesis. Thanks!)

KNOW: Gain knowledge by studying the following:
1) Read the following about Martin Luther, including the quotes at the bottom:
Brief Bio
95 Thesis
2) Write down one date from the life of Martin Luther on your timeline
3) Watch the following video: https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/2011-05-011-honesty-you-better-believe-it?category=mormon-messages/mormon-messages-2011
4) Read or memorize the following:
Matthew 26:25: 25 And I give unto you a commandment, that ye shall observe to do the things which ye have seen me do, and bear record of me even unto the end.
Martin Luther: I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen."
5)  Read the following quote and think about how it applies to what you learned in CORE class and in what you study for Journeyman:
"Let us have the courage to defy the consensu, the courage th stand for principle.  Courage, not compromise, brings the smiel of God's approval.  Courage becomes a living and an attractive virtue when it is regarded not only as a willingness to die manfully, but as the determination to live decently.  A moral coward is one who is afraid to do what he thinks is right because others will disapprove or laugh.  Remember that all men have their fears, but those who face their fears with dignity have courage as well." (Thomas S. Monson, "Courage Counts" 11/1986 Ensign)

UNDERSTANDING: Create Understanding by doing two or more of the following:
-Pick a word that you feels describes Martin Luther and do a word study on it.  Bring it to class to share.
-After reading through the 95 Thesis, pick at least 10 and write down or tell someone why you agree with them or not.
-Pick your favorite quote from Martin Luther's quotes and create a way to share it visually or some other way, like a handout or powerpoint with other quotes like it (for example).
-Find someone who stood up for something that you admire.  List some characteristics of that person and bring them to share.  Ask yourself the question, "What made them the way they are?"
-Consider how Martin Luther was a leader after your readings about him and compare him to other leaders you know, whether in a paper, powerpoint, comparison list, or speech.  How was he the same and how was he different?
-Martin Luther did what he felt was right and felt guided by his conscience.  Write down any experiences you have had doing this and try and find at least 2 other people that you know who have also had experiences and write them down as well.

INTELLIGENCE: Create Intelligence by doing the following:
-Come to class prepared to participate in a simulation!  Prepare to defend homeschooling!
